The goal of a school-supervised work-based learning program is for students to learn employability skills and explore their career interest. Work-based learning reinforces for students the connection between work and school, provides a chance for meaningful contact with adults/mentors, improves their chances for successful employment as young adults, and helps solidify career interests. Examples of work-based learning programs include job-shadowing, internships, service learning, school-based enterprise, paid/unpaid work experience, supervised agriculture experience (SAE), employability skill certificate program, cooperative (coop) education skill certificate program, and youth apprenticeship.
