SUMMER SESSIONS
June 13- A New "PODDsibility" for Communication: Creating and Using PODD Communication Systems
CESA 5, 626 E. Slifer St., Portage, 8:30-3:30, $125
Students who use alternative means for communication frequently don’t have a way to truly communicate what they are thinking. They may not have all of the vocabulary they need and they are limited by what others have programmed into their system.
PODD (Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display) Communication Books may be low tech, but they have the capability to support AAC users who are fully competent communicators.
Come learn about the “PODDsibilities” of this system. Participants will leave with “starter” PODD systems to use with students.

June 19- iPod/iPad Basics "101": Managing and Using iDevices in Special Education
CESA 5, 626 E. Slifer St., Portage, 8:30-3:30 $120
There are many iPod/iPad apps to use with students with special needs, but before you start using apps with students, you need to know how to set up, manage and use your device. This ‘basics’ workshop will show you how to set up and use an iPod/iPad with students who have special challenges. Resources for accessories, protective cases, switch access and finding free and paid apps for students with special needs will be shared. This overview will include General and Accessibility settings, iTunes management of apps, podcasts and iTunes U. Apps for AAC, social skills, literacy, math, data collection, behavior management, music, songs, art and games will be shared and shown. Participants should bring an iPod/iPad if possible. If you want to download any of the free (or paid) apps, you must have an iTunes account set up including a username and password. Some devices (iPad &/or iPod Touch) are available to use on a "first come, first served" basis. Please contact Judi Cumley cumleyj@cesa5.org to reserve a device for the training.

June 21- APPS 4 Communication: AAC Apps, Visual Schedule Apps, Social Story Apps and MORE!
CESA 5, 626 E. Slifer St., Portage, 8:30-3:30, $125
There are literally hundreds of “communication apps” that may support students with communication challenges in the iTunes store ranging from AAC to articulation, visual schedules, social stories, language & concept development and more. We will explore and compare SOME of the apps that Special Education teachers and Speech, Language Pathologists may find useful including those that you may not consider "typical" apps for speech or language development. Resource lists of apps will be provided, but also be prepared to share your own favorites! While we may spend a limited time reviewing new features in IOS 5, this session is intended for those who are familiar with iDevices, accessibility and operating features.
The morning will focus on AAC apps and features you should consider for those students who need to support their communication. The afternoon will focus on “other” communication apps such as those for schedules, creating social stories, language development and more. In addition to paid apps, many free apps will be highlighted and can be downloaded and explored in the afternoon. Please come with your Apple ID (iTunes username & password) if you want to download any apps. Some iDevices (iPad or iPod Touch) will be available for loan. Please contact Judi Cumley cumleyj@cesa5.org to reserve a device.
