An Assistive Technology device is defined as "any piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities (300.5 Authority: 20 U.S. C. chapter 33, Section 1401 (25))".
Some teams struggle with identifying appropriate AT for students, training staff/student(s) in using the AT, acquiring AT for trial uses and providing AT services. Assistive Technology services are available to all districts within the CESA 5 boundaries by the Assistive Technology Consultant. Services can include, but aren't limited to:
Technical assistance to IEP teams and special education teachers, therapists and support staff on the various options for addressing disabled student's needs for assistive technology including "low to high" technology to support communication (written and oral), access to the environment, and learning/processing disabilities.
Individual, small-large group trainings and workshops for teachers, therapists and support staff on assistive technology devices, software and instructional strategies to support the needs of students with disabilities.
Consultation and observation of students in their customary environment(s) to help staff determine appropriate assistive technologies and strategies.
Provide a lending library of assistive technology devices, resources and software for regular and special education teachers, therapists and support staff in the SEIMC (Special Education Instructional Media Center). Districts that do not contract with SEIMC can check out most AT materials for a nominal fee.
