"Education cannot be for students in any authentic way, if it is not of and by them."
- William H. Schubert

Our goal at COMAN isn’t to tell our students to change their behavior, but to show them that they want to change their behavior, and then guide them on their road to self discovery and to an appreciation of the intrinsic value that behaving appropriately carries.  There are, of course, other rewards that come with good behavior; more choices in the future, better grades, and, at COMAN, the signing of a Mainstream contract.  It is with great pride that the COMAN community has four students who have signed Mainstream contracts.

A Mainstream contract is the first step in earning classes back at the student’s home school district.  These students have worked hard to maintain expected and above expected behavior for four or more weeks.  Our job can be bittersweet, losing students who we have formed relationships with to their successfully completing our program.  It is to all of our benefit that our students are making choices that benefit themselves, families, schools, and communities.

COMAN Family Night

COMAN Family Night

At COMAN we believe that it is imperative that we build a strong bond between family, school, and our community; in order for our program to maximize its potential for our students.

With that thought in mind, COMAN had our bi-annual Family Night.

A time set aside for all family members to come to COMAN and enjoy the staff, building, games and of course good eats.

This year we invited the families for a game of BINGO, complete with prizes donated from local establishments and letter caller extraordinaire Andrew Poquette (COMAN Teacher).  We then shared a chili-dog meal, conversation, and a round of hacky-sack.  We were fortunate to have parents, grandparents and cousins show up to the event.

Books of Hope Program Uganda
Reaching out beyond yourself into the world community and exploring the plight of people around the world are goals we strive for with our students at COMAN.  It is important to us that our students recognize a world  outside of themselves, and draw connections from their own lives to the world around them.  This semester we participated in the Books of Hope Program Uganda.  The program focuses on students from the United States writing, drawing and ultimately sending original books to children in Uganda who are living in the midst of fear due to rampant warfare.  A brutal civil war has caused unimaginable tragedy for the children of northern Uganda.  Over the past 20 years, many thousands have been killed, tortured, kidnapped, and enslaved.  In  order to offer friendship and support, we are sending student-made books to refugee camps, schools, orphanages, and hospitals, where children are eager for a more joyful life.  Our students exceeded our  expectations regarding both their wonderful creativity and the empathy they showed for the children in Uganda.  It was tough for the students to part with books that they had worked so hard on, but they felt proud that something they created would be half way around the world helping children their own age.  Next year we will be working with the same organization and sending books to India.   Submitted by Andrew Meyer, COMAN Teacher
