SEIMC Materials and Coding
The SEIMC collection can be searched via the Media Center Online Catalog.  Call numbers for all SEIMC materials begin with S and are followed by additional coding to distinguish the types of material found in each category. Detailed descriptions of each category follow.

AD   Affective Development

Affective Development materials contain those which help develop student's emotional and social skills including social skills lessons and stories for students pre-school through young adult; teaching self monitoring for temper, activity level, and social choices; self-esteem and other social/emotional skills.

EQ   Equipment

The Equipment category contains adaptive and assistive equipment for students with learning, physical, language and visual impairments.  That includes switches and switch accessible equipment, augmentative communication devices, hand-held devices (reading pens, hand-held spellers, portable keyboard), computer imput devices (adapted joysticks, mice and keyboards), miscellaneous adapted environmental control devices and sensory input equipment.

LA   Language Arts
Materials in the Language category range from those that teach very specific skills (articulation of consonants) to generalized skills (language development software).  Materials for linguistically young students include software and language readiness, vocabulary development, communication displays (PECS, PCS displays, IntelliKeys overlay) simple cause-effect software, story based language lessons, digital photo galleries and more.  Materials for older students include software for teaching grammar, punctuation, spelling, pre-writing and keyboarding programs.  Assistive technologies include symbol-based word processor, talking word processor, word prediction and voice recognition software and "suite software" programs (SOLO, TextHelp, Accessibility Suite, IntelliTools Classroom Software).

MA   Mathematics
Math category materials include manipulative, print and software designed to increase skills in specific or general areas including early concepts, computational, algebraic and geometic concepts. Assistive technologies are included that provide computer access for math, large manipulatives, and specialized calculators.  Math software in a "game" format provides extra practice of specific skills.

PC   Perceptual Development

Materials in the Perceptual Development category include switch toys, single switch software manipulatives to promote fine motor skills and print and software to develop handwriting skills.

PR   Professional Resources
Professional Resources include materials appropriate for personal and staff development.  Professional books, videos and software provide information about specific disabilities, intervention strategies, legal requirements, software tutorials and more.  Assessment tools include those which can be used to identify developmental or academic levels of students, language assessments, reading free inventories and checklists to identify specific skills or disabilities.  Resources for parents are also included in this category.

RD   Reading
Reading materials includes print, manipulatives and software that targets skills including early literacy, phonemic development, phonics, high frequency words and comprehension.  Alternative reading materials include functional literacy, high-interest/low reading ability, computer based books (Start to Finish series, Discis books) and books on tape.  Other assistive technologies include scan and read software (WYNN, Kurzweil) and text-to-speech software.

SC   Science

Materials in the Science category include curriculum-based topics that have adapted levels for students with disabilities and/or universal design options included to increase accessibility.

SS   Social Studies
Social Studies materials include adapted curricular materials about community and self.

VO   Vocational Education
Resources in the Vocational Category include vocational training materials for students with disabilities, independent living materials and self-contained adapted work kits (i.e. plastic pipe assembly).
