Searching the Online Catalog

The Media Center uses the Alexandria Online Catalog and Advance Booking System.  There are several ways of searching for materials.

Simple Search Window

  • Type a word or phrase in the text box.  Choose one of the graphic options, Author, Title, Subject, All Words, Series, or Call Number to search under.  If you press Return or Enter before clicking on one of the graphics, Alexandria will perform an All Words search.
  • If you enter a single word or combination of letters, Alexandria will search for words or phrases beginning with the text you enter.  For example, if you enter cat in the box, your search results will include media items which contain the words cat, cattle, catch, catfish, catalog, etc.
  • If you end the text with a period, Alexandria only searches for data that matches your text exactly.  So to find only media items which contain the word cat, type cat.

Boolean Search Window

  • Click on the Boolean Search button to narrow your search using Boolean operators.  Choose the search type from the drop-down menu, enter a search word or phrase, choose a Boolean operator (AND, OR, NOT, and THROUGH) and add another search type & phrase.
  • To search media in only one CESA 5 Media Center collection, use the medium search type on the drop-down menu and enter in the following for each collection, followed by a space.

Enter:   To search on this collection only:
  IMC   Instructional Media Center collection
ITSS   Instructional Technology Support Serivces collection
SEIMC   Special Education Instructional Media Center collection
SDRC   Staff Development Resources Center collection

Browse Search Window

  • This window gives you additional search options.  Type a search term in the text box at the top and choose a search option from the list on the left side.

 Notes

  • All searches should bring you a list of titles that fit your criteria.  You can sort this list by using the Sort By option listed above the list of titles.
  • For additional information on the item you are interested in, click on the Title.  This will display a page of information on the item, such as :  Call Number, Medium, Series, Subjects, and a Notes area that contains a brief description of the item.  Clicking on the Series will display a list of  titles in this series.  Clicking on Subjects will display a list of titles in the same subject area.
  • At the bottom of the page under Status, it will tell you if this item is currently available or when the next reservation will be.
  • Use the print option on your browser to print listings or descriptions.
  • Reserving Materials will give you directions for reserving items online.
